Below is a round-up of blog posts covering mRec2011. We thank the respective authors for their coverage and recap of the September 30th event.

  • Could You Live Without Your Mobile Devices?Could You Live Without Your Mobile Devices?

I recently left my phone at home on a work day and I genuinely felt panicked without it. My phone is now my email, my camera, my video, and of course the most important part my social network dash-board– all wrapped up into my hand-held device. Giving me access to the internet, my email, my IM, etc and of course the only way to be reached if there was an emergency with my family. Cell phones, ipads, tablets, and other mobile devices have become the new accessory that we must carry around. So, after I forgot my mobile I do a mental check-list of four things: my keys, my wallet, my laptop and my phone. As I was sharing my blog idea with my friend Alecia Sullivan (@seattlesourcer), and she shared and idea that was found by Carmen Hudson (@peopleshark) this blog post that was written in 2010: Clean Water: More Have Access to Cell Phones Than Toilets by Jonathan Wolfman. This blog just shows how Mobile has become the#1 must have gadget created. Look around you and check to see how many mobile devices you can see…. Now count how many of them do not have a cell phone with them? Honestly, mobile has become a part of us, and most of us actually feel naked when we leave home without it. How else can we call to tell someone we're on our way, or getting directions if you're lost? How else can we shop online or just keep in touch with our love ones. If you had to, could you live without your phone? For a day? For a week? For a year? • HTML5: Will it render smartphone platforms irrelevant?HTML5: Will it render smartphone platforms irrelevant?

Guest Post by D.Ray (A.K.A. - MobileTrendSpot) The debate between developing an app or mobile website is soon to be a debate no longer. Out of the 7 billion on the planet, 5.9 billion are now mobile phone users. Given the ubiquitous reach of mobile worldwide, it's evident more than ever that employers looking to expand their reach can't and shouldn't ignore what is happening right under their watch. This is not new territory. In most industry, products that do well are packaged with other products that may not do so well, or are looking for some exposure. Most kids don't like veggies, but they do like animated characters. Put that yellow sponge on a package of carrots and here we go. Excuse me, is that a salad in your really happy meal? Smart business. I don't know if I should admit this, but I did not know that TYSON was the supplier for KFC until they mentioned it in a commercial. I know what you're thinking: so how is any of this relevant to mobile? Apply this same logic above to the growing number of smartphone users and what happens? Things paired become commonplace. For example, finding a job using your smartphone may seem novel now, but if companies move to advertising that actually shows someone getting a job using said smartphone, the idea moves from novel to typical. Having a smartphone usually means you enjoy and or look for the fastest or the most efficient way to get things done while on the move. Right now, the language that will allow for the best of both is HTML5. While there are many clear benefits of HTML5, it all boils down to "user experience". In today's world a website is standard, but opening up the mobile web marketplace has become the new gold standard. With millions of available mobile apps, competition for attention (and loyalty) remains fierce. If you are an employer and want to design for greater reach, as well as for a truly enhanced mobile experience, then it's time to think HTML5. In simple terms, the responsive design functionality of HTML5 means your audience will no longer be restricted to a particular platform (or device). HTML5 easily scales your site to fit whatever device being used (e.g., desktop, iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, etc.). For mobile users, the clear advantage is that they can finally say good-bye to all the native app downloads and head straight to any mobile site with little effort and seamless connectivity. After all, simple is better-right? The question: Will HTML5 render smartphone platforms irrelevant? If HTML5 continues to evolve, I think we'll have our answer soon enough. As a former job-seeker exploring careers on the mobile device - I am here to tell you that the user experience still matters. Requiring users to download every new employer app is not practical. As advancements in HTML5 continue to improve the overall web browsing experience, the need for mobile app downloads will soon become obsolete. So, Mr. Employer, if you are truly serious about reaching a broader (global) audience and enhancing that "mobile web" experience - consider designing with HTML5. Launch it, then watch your user satisfaction and engagement grow. You can thank me later. Guest post by D. Ray (A.K.A. - MobileTrendSpot) D. • How mobile is redefining the recruitment process? How mobile is redefining the recruitment process?

Guest Blog by Aki Kakko Mobile is changing the world of business. In 2012 more internet traffic is already coming from mobile devices than from computers. For growing number of the world population it is the primary or the only device to use internet. If we ignore this huge change in any or in our industry or simply think it is just one of the new platforms then we are totally missing the point. It is not just a new platform - it changes people`s behaviour and it shapes both: how companies do business and how they run their businesses. And these changes are happening incredibly fast! The switch from online to print in terms of revenues happened during 10 or more years, while now when mobile is changing the traditional way of using the internet and it will affect everything in it and will happen way faster. Customers, loyalty, revenue streams etc. are again shared based on the new innovations that can rethink and redesign processes or the whole industries. So the question whether companies should adapt mobile in their recruitment strategy sounds absolutely irrelevant to me. It should be a no-brainer decision for all the companies and it is always better to be proactive then to be forced to change. And this as well heavily affects the suppliers that operate in the recruitment industry, so if you look from the supplier side of the industry and now reading this be aware that the cow giving your daily milk can pass away soon. Lately I have seen quite many surveys and polls created to discover how great the impact of the mobile is made on our industry. And based on what I have seen I don’t notice that we are totally realising how the new innovations reshape the industries - the logic behind the change I mean. Latest poll that I remember was titled: "As a candidate do you really want to apply for a job using your mobile phone?" . First of all, when the word `really` is used in the title already I doubt whether the results are going to be the same as if it has been asked in a neutral version. But what I really want to underline is that the question sounds as ridiculous then as the question “what would be the best possible vehicle” asked from the horse owners in the late 1800’s. Well the answer of course would have been `horse that eats less and runs faster`. The horse is here to stay but the automobile is only a novelty, a fad.”- President of Michigan Savings Bank, 1901 So to learning's: Innovations are not typically made inside of the industry by the same companies that are currently operating in it and when you see the resistance it is typically a sign to pay more attention to the matter. For some there is just too much to lose of course. And not too many are bold enough to start cannibalising their current business in the short term to make the change that is needed to stay alive in the long term. And please, if you want to understand how people behave don’t ask, observe and analyse the current behavior and especially behavioural change. So few words about the behavior: Even recruitment industry as such is so left behind in terms of adapting the mobile in the processes we already see the huge demand from the candidates side. Even though we are keeping the process to be really difficult for the candidates they are still using it more and more. Well at least they are trying. Just to point out few facts » 81% of smartphone users search for companies on their mobiles » 88% of jobseekers already or would search for jobs on mobile » Google receives +40M recruitment related searches/month from mobile devices in the UK alone » Career related activities are among the TOP-10 activities that users use their mobile internet for Main reasons why mobile recruitment is broken... Actually the whole recruitment process is broken and now it is a good time to fix it (or at least make it to be a bit better) when the first time in history we need this industry to actually focus on building services around the candidates not opposite. Why so? Because candidates want to be served better, they are also willing to pay for it and they want to be empowered with the tools that help them to avoid: » Impersonal service: For example, complicated and long forms that are most of the time not personalised and most of the questions are irrelevant both for the candidates and for the hiring companies. » ATS Black hole: And when you have finally submitted your application of up to 10 pages the power in the process is again sent to the companies. What we will see is that there will be a great amount of additional steps in the process and the current way to apply will eventually just fade away. There will be more transparency and the candidate will keep the power that was sent to the company during the whole old-school application process. So goodbye for the days when recruiter was in the control. » It is worth to point out that in the past recruitment has been an event for most of the people however now for many candidates that are under 40 it is an ongoing process. And most of the current services like job boards are not build to support that. What I mean by that is- you as a candidate are all the time candidate only the activity level is changing. There might be as well good news for the companies: It is going to be easier to reach and get access to the candidates with these new services and the recruitment process is going to be more and more based on demand and relationship building instead of owning the high amount of candidate information by building talent pools. So to summarize 1. Mobile is and will redesign the whole recruitment process whether you want it or not. 2. It will do it fast. 3. It will empower the candidates. • mRecSpotlight Episode 3: Has Joe Essenfeld solved the mobile apply process?mRecSpotlight Episode 3: Has Joe Essenfeld solved the mobile apply process?

mRecSpotlight Video Interview Episode 3: Joe Essenfeld, Founder & CEO at JIBE As mobile continues to saturate the marketplace, employers around the world are finally starting to take a closer look at how they integrate mobile as a recruitment strategy. mRecSpotlight recently spoke with Joe Essenfeld to learn more about how they are innovating in the mobile recruiting space. JIBE's core business is centered around a referral-based hiring platform that enables jobseekers to tap into their existing social networks to gain access to the jobs they want through the people they already know. Essenfeld started JIBE back in 2010 as a platform where "friends help friends land jobs". However, today, it has evolved into much more. In fact, one of the most interesting developments at JIBE is their mobile recruitment solution for the jobseeker. According to Essenfeld, JIBE's mobile-friendly platform connects to an employer's ATS. Unlike many other mobile recruiting solutions in the marketplace, Jobseekers using the JIBE mobile platform now have the ability to apply to jobs directly from their mobile device. Why is this significant and what does this actually mean? Well, anyone who has followed the developments in the mobile recruitment space knows the "apply process" is one of the biggest issues with engaging jobseekers via the mobile device today. So, has JIBE actually solved the mobile apply process riddle? Watch the JIBE video interview (or click below) to learn more. mRecruitingcamp was very excited to have ABC 7 News live coverage of mRecruitingcamp's debut in San Francisco on September 30th. Here is a brief write-up from their interview with Michael Marlatt and participants of mRec2011: SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Here is an indication of how much things have changed in the last few years. There are more cellphones in the world than computers and televisions put together and some companies are betting that you'll use your smartphone to look for your next job. "The three things that you walk away with in the morning when you step out of your house -- your keys, your wallet and your mobile device" -Michael Marlatt iPhones, iPads and Blackberries aren't just about playing "Angry Birds" anymore. They're quickly becoming the major way we get information. "There are really three screens. There's the TV of which there are two billion of those worldwide, there's the PC, of which there are one billion, then there's the third screen, the cellphone. There are more than five billion cellphones globally," said Chuck Martin, a mobile technology author. "The Third Screen" is the title of Martin's new book, urging businesses to embrace the cellphone, reaching out with mobile apps and web sites -- not just to customers, but also to job seekers. "Some of these employers that want to be leading edge, bleeding edge, and looking at how do we stay connected with the folks when they're on the go?" -Michael Marlatt Marlatt heard that question so many times, he put together a conference about it. Though record numbers of Americans are looking for work, companies report that finding the right candidate is even harder than before, especially if they already have a job. • mRecruitingcamp: Why You Should Not Miss This In 2012mRecruitingcamp: Why You Should Not Miss This In 2012

I have to tell you, I almost didn’t go to mRecruitingcamp (#mRec), the first ever mobile recruiting conference organized by brilliant and passionate Recruiting Consultant, Michael Marlatt. WHAT??? NOT GO??? Michael stays on the forefront of technology that can support talent attraction and engagement — mobile, SoLoMo (social-local-mobile), augmented reality, semantic, social, cloud, etc., etc. — which if you know anything about me, you know this is just the kind of thing I love. And yes – he is part of our amazing Atlanta team of recruiting and sourcing gurus – and you know we love to support our own. So why, you ask, would I even hesitate to go? Like everyone else, I have to weigh time, budgets, and other commitments against the return — and it is all about the short term, right? At first I thought, I have two back to back conferences in Vegas (#HREvolution and HR Technology – posts coming) directly after #mRec that directly relate to work I am doing right now — in addition to an already full plate of billable work, conferences, speaking, blogging, and my beautiful, busy family — and frankly, I am not in the midst of deploying a mobile strategy, sooo… Ugh. I hate it when I am short-sighted. It would have been a huge mistake. Michael did a great job of putting together an incredible agenda and group of speakers, all carefully designed to enlighten, educate, and most importantly think ahead about how organizations can leverage mobile media and technology to find, attract, and retain talent. Not only did he accomplish that mission but he attracted an incredible array of attendees as well — humbling to be around so much brain power and forward thinking!! It also made for excellent social engagement pre- and post-conference :) And newsworthy…Congrats to Michael and mRecruitingcamp for also being featured on ABC7 News, KGO-TV San Francisco, CA: #mRec highlights for me were eye-opening statistics, trends, tools, strategies, and a variety of things to think about before embarking on a mobile strategy. There was of course the normal debate over mobile web vs. mobile apps — though for most organizations I am not sure why this is a conundrum. In my humble opinion, most people are not going to be searching for or downloading a special app for your company — the chances are they will just happen upon your site — so put your focus getting it mobile ready. Which brings me to what I think should be the biggest takeaway for anyone who attended — or did not — and that is, whether you like it or not, you ARE already mobile. One of the more popular and staggering statistics cited at #mRec is that 77% of the world population carries a cell phone — but only 20% of the Fortune 1000, have a mobile optimized site (infographic alert #1 – thx @TalentMinded). And 92% of career sites ignore the mobile channel all together (infographic alert #2 – thx @mobile_dave). Even less detect mobile access upfront and automatically redirect to a mobile rendered site. FACT: A huge percentage of those cell phones are smartphones, and the tablet market is also starting to explode. FACT: Mobile data networks are more robust than ever and people are accessing the internet more and more with these devices on a regular basis. So let me say it again – YOU ARE ALREADY MOBILE. Because you don’t have a choice, it really is wise to take control of your mobile strategy and make your site compatible with this means of access. Presentations from practitioners such as Chris Hoyt, Talent Engagement & Marketing Leader at PepsiCo (@TheRecruiterGuy) and Richard Cho (@ChoRichard), Recruiting Manager at Facebook were incredibly insightful and thought-provoking. Keynotes from Michael Becker and Chuck Martin, a great session on Mobile Gamification by Louis Vong, as well as the panel discussions, were also worth well beyond the price of admission. I plan to write more about some of these topics over the coming weeks — including tidbits from the conversations that occurred around the sessions I attended. Lastly, a big shout out to emcee, Jenny DeVaughn! While many of you may think I am biased about my good friend, she really was the icing on the cake at #mRec – great job, Jenny!!! Check out the slide presentations, graciously provided via #mRec. And most importantly, if you didn’t make it this year, don’t miss #mRec2012.
